Lights-to-flag win for Alex Palou at Nürburgring
The Euroformula Open has added a new race winner to its roll of honour: Alex Palou (Campos Racing), a young driver from Spain – born in Barcelona- who debuting in the series took his maiden win after a brilliant performance from start to finish.
Palou posted pole position time in the morning by a small margin beating Sandy Stuvik (RP Motorsport) and starting alongside on the front row of the grid. Despite his young age, 17 years old, he made an almost perfect start pulling away from Stuvik almost immediately. Behind, Che-One Lim (Emilio de Villota Motorsport) collided into John Simonyan (RP Motorsport) and forcing him to retire. Palou´s race pace was absolutely amazing and, despite the efforts made by Stuvik over the entire race, he kept the Thai driver at bay. After 16 laps he reached the chequered flag as winner, posting the fastest lap as well. Stuvik finished second three seconds behind.
Third place on the podium was hard fought for several drivers. Cameron Twynham (Team West-Tec) climbed to third place followed by his teammate Tanart Sathienthirakul and Yu Kanamaru (Emilio de Villota Motorsport) and Artur Janosz (RP Motorsport). But, over time, both Team West-Tec cars were attacked by their rivals resulting in being overtaken by them. Kanamaru and Janosz passed Tanart on lap 10 and, on lap 11, Twynham could not defend his podium place from them either. Japan´s driver Kanamaru came third, ahead of Janosz. Sathienthirakul was finally fifth and Twynham sixth.
Yarin Stern (Team West-Tec) after a difficult qualifying session finished seventh having an interesting battle with Russia´s Konstantin Tereschenko (Team West-Tec). Igor Urien (Emilio de Villota Motorsport) and Wei Fung Thong (Team West-Tec) rounded of the top-ten.
In Copa, today´s winner was Constantino Peroni (RP Motorsport). His win was achieved only with some difficulty as he had to fight against his teammate Saud Al Faisal, clashing once.
